Much of Steven's work tends to be curvilinear, reflecting on the organic energy of living organisms. He gives the wood a positive shape by bending it around a negative form, transforming the linear into sensuous curves with animate features.
Some pieces highlight the iridescence of figured woods; many depend on the contrast of light and dark colored woods.
Steven's designs are contemporary interpretations influenced by the Shaker period, and the Arts and Crafts movement, both of which have a rich cultural history in upstate and central New York.
Steven is also inspired by the quality and simplicity of Scandinavian, and Asian design ethics.
